FAQ

What do I need to get started in needle felting?
Needle felting requires specialized needle felting needles in order to felt your fiber. So, I would start there along with some carded core wool.
What needle felting mat would you recommend?
Anything that protects your needle from hitting the table and breaking. It doesn't even need to be a specialized mat, it could be a fold towel. Now, if you are needing a surface to needle felt flat details like wings, skin pelts or ears then I recommend a felting brush mat and a multi-needle tool.
Where can I get felting supplies?
Hudson Valley Atelier sells basic felting supplies, enough to get you started. Places I enjoy purchasing from are Living Felt and Sarafina Fiber both based in the United States. If you are overseas, then World of Wool is one of the best places.
How can I get my 3D projects to be smoother?
Learn your needle types and their uses for each stage of your project. Also learn your stabbing techniques for each stage of your project...not everything during your needle felt process is rapid fire stabbing. In reality, the firmer your sculpt is the smoother. Once you learn your tools, techniques and have done enough practice then you can introduce other techniques to elevate your smoothing process.
Regarding wet felting - I tried to wet felt a mystery bag of fiber and it is not felting?
Chances are the fiber bag has either no animal protein fiber present or a too low amount of protein fiber to support all the random non-animal fibers.
I am interested in doing more abstract felting work. Would you be able to guide me?
Absolutely! Understanding your materials, tools, step in the process is only going to strengthen your art practice whether it is realistic or abstract journey. And that goes for any art medium!
